EMD SD9 for 1:8 Scale

Target Launch: Q4 2026

Nicknamed the “Cadillac” of diesels, our design of an EMD SD9 in 1:8 scale will be a smooth riding powerhouse on the rails. With the success of our GP9, and the growth of our new shop, this engine will be our first endeavor into large 3 axle diesel locomotives.

This project will take time to develop due to the Flexicoil trucks that are unique to EMD SD locomotives. Our goal for the Flexicoil trucks is to complete cored mold tooling for investment casting in 1030 steel to closely match the prototype in appearance and function with a center spider. Completing these trucks also opens the doors to more EMD SD locomotives up to SD45’s (SD40-2 came later) for additional large road power.

As design progresses on the overall engine and Flexicoil trucks, updated will be shared. As of right now we know the following information about the engine:

Engine Overview:

Primary Engine: ME1003 Motor at 48V w/ Center Drive System

Length: ~96” with couplers

Construction: Steel frame and body, pre-formed w/ tab and slot construction (see our GP9 design)

Flexicoil Trucks: Steel, fully sprung, Journal Box castings from Pike River Shops, Brake Cylinders from Precision Steel Car
